Therapies

Therapies

NOW’s therapy programs play an important part in a participant’s recovery and on-going success.  Trauma, equine and yoga therapies provide participants with additional opportunities to work on the challenges they have previously experienced so they can move forward with courage, strength and peace in their lives.

Trauma Therapy

Since 2000, NOW Canada has been providing trauma therapy to women and youth.  Our professional therapist has extensive experience and success in working with people who are trying to heal from past trauma.

Trauma therapy helps participants learn new coping skills to deal with their traumatic life events so they can increase their self-esteem, continue to make positive healthy lifestyle changes and become empowered to rebuild their lives and reach their full potential.

As funding permits, bi weekly trauma therapy is available to women and youth living in our Transitional Housing or our Affordable Housing Programs.  We also partner with Stepping Stones Counselling to offer child appropriate therapy to children of NOW participants.

Equine Therapy

Equine therapy is offered in a group setting and is part of the Essentials curriculum.  It is a truly unique way of learning about one’s self. The focus of Equine Therapy is not on riding or horsemanship.  It takes place out of the saddle – on the ground, and allows those who are struggling to learn skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to develop a commitment to recovery and goal setting.

Equine therapy takes place once a week and if space permits, tenants in our Affordable Housing Programs can also take advantage of this innovative therapy.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy is offered in a group setting and participants in NOW’s affordable housing buildings join women and youth from the Essentials program for an hour of re-focusing and tranquility.

This is not a typical yoga class, but a unique blend of Hatha and Ashtanga yoga specifically designed to help lower participants’ stress and anxiety levels, increase self-awareness and positive thinking and give participants a greater control over their thoughts and actions. This weekly group therapy session is aimed at increasing participants physical and mental stability to ensure they remain focused on their recovery.
